Longtime marathoner Joseph Curcio told the New York Times that he was 'just lucky' as the first of the two Boston Marathon bombs exploded just yards to his left.
The world saw Joseph Curcio last week, but its attention was focused more closely, in countless video replays, on the orange fireball blooming beside him. There he was, though, a grainy figure in dark blue running clothes, visible from finish line cameras as he was about to celebrate the completion of the Boston Marathon. "I was just about to throw up my arms as I crossed the finish line, and that's when the first bomb went off," the Chalfont man recalled in an audio interview with the New York Times. The 63-year-old information security officer said he managed to stay on his feet in the chaos that followed the blast. Guests reportedly identified Dengel by a tattoo across his back that read "Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus," which is Latin for "By the power of truth, I while living, have conquered the universe."
