The Brunette Lucy

Can You Have Too Many Turkeys?

Lucy's Matt doesn't think there is such a thing as too many Thanksgiving turkeys.

To me, Thanksgiving is the harbinger of the Christmas season, and I look forward to putting up the tree that weekend. For Matt, however, it marks his favorite day of the year because he loves turkey. He looks forward to the big dinner and all the leftover turkey sandwiches, turkey casseroles, turkey stir fry, you name it. He loves turkey more than Santa loves his elves. So one year, we were out and he wanted to stop in at one of those discount food stores. We don’t have one in our town and Matt likes to shop there whenever he can because second only to turkey, he loves bargains. When we got to the meat aisle, we saw that they had Jennie-O turkeys on sale for 38 cents a pound. I glanced over and saw Matt’s eyes glaze over. He was thrilled; …

Nor'Easter Jeopardizes Thanksgiving Travel

Travel plans for next week don't look great, according to the latest forecasts.

AccuWeather.com reports another nor'easter during Thanksgiving week will put travel in jeopardy for the holiday, while a storm also hits the West Coast. A nor'easter may form over the western Atlantic by Sunday, sending rain and wind into parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast through at least the middle of the week. "How close to the coast the storm tracks will determine how unsettled the weather gets in the I-95 corridor to the Appalachians," AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said Wednesday. There is potential that the nor'easter could strengthen and move farther inland into New England at midweek. In this scenario, there is some potential for a wintry mix or snow over the mountains of northern New England. With…

Making Thanksgiving for Those in Need

If Thanksgiving is looking thin for your family or someone you know, find out more about a free meal to be served at a Doylestown church.

Families will gather on Thanksgiving around tables laden with food, but a few Doylestown-area families will spend their holiday making sure others may share that bounty. A couple of families from the Doylestown United Methodist Church will serve a hot meal on Thanksgiving day between noon and 2 p.m. at the church at 320 E. Swamp Rd., according to Jill Kahlenberg, one of the organizers. Anyone in need who would like to attend the dinner is asked to call in advance, so the group can be sure to prepare enough food. To RSVP, those with phone service are asked to call 215-262-0419 and leave a message with their initials and the number of people who are coming, Kahlenberg said. The church also has a volunteer who can arrange transportation for …

Thanksgiving Recipes: How to Cook Stuffing and Other Favorite Side Dishes

A turkey can't just sit alone on the table. Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.

What would a turkey be on Thanksgiving without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the food coma-inducing meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy pulls away from the skin. After removing squash from oven, let …

Photo Contest: What Are You Thankful For?

Share a photo that shows what you're thankful for, and you could win a turkey for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and we'd like to know what you're thankful for! Post a photo of what you're grateful for to enter our contest. You could win a turkey from McCaffrey's (or the equivalent in a voucher), plus a Patch prize pack. McCaffrey's, with stores in Newtown and Yardley (as well as N.J. sites), lost its power last week during Hurricane Sandy and lost its perishable food stock. "It's just food; we can restock that,"said Kathy Bodine of McCaffrey's. "It's nothing compared to what some of our neighbors lost." Bodine said the company is thankful for its costumers and that's the reason it wanted to donate a prize to the photo contest. Not sure what kind of photo to enter? Well, it can be anything near and dear to you - …

5 Things To Know Today

Start Prepping the Bird Now

And have the number for the turkey hotline handy, just in case.

1. Weather. National Weather Service says: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 9am, then showers likely. High near 58. North wind between 6 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. 2. If you're defrosting a turkey for tomorrow, turkey experts say you should start now. Put it in the refrigerator, not out on the counter, or in cold water. And check out this link for a hilarious compendium of wanna-be cooks who've run afoul of their bird (you knew that was coming, didn't you?). 3. If you really do need help with questions about roasting a turkey, Butterball's hotline can be reached at 1-800-BUTTERBALL or email them at talkline@butterball.com. The USDA also staffs a Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., …
