The members of Doylestown's Temple Judea walked about 2.5 miles Sunday to bring the Torah to their new synagogue on Rogers Road.
A new chapter began Sunday for the members of Temple Judea of Bucks County. The congregation met at the synagogue on Swamp Road in Doylestown, which has been their home since 1967. After a final ceremony there, they said their goodbyes to the old building, removed the five Torah scrolls from the Ark, and began the journey to their new home. Hundreds of men, women and children walked in a procession along Swamp Road and then down side roads to reach their new synagogue, 2.5 miles away, near the intersection of York and Rogers roads. Construction has been underway on the new synagogue for the past year. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year in Jewish religion and culture. It is also referred to as the “Day of Atonement,” and the tradition is to fast solemnly for repentance and atonement of sins. Yom Kippur marks the end of the annual High Holy Day period (Sept. 16 to Sept. 26 in 2012), which begins with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Observation of Yom Kippur began at sunset on Tuesday. Central Bucks schools are closed Wednesday in honor of the holiday, and Temple Judea of Bucks County has a full day of services planned. If plans for other developments in the area were firmer, Doylestown Township Supervisors might have made a different decision about how to handle the widening of Rogers Road. But with the only certain construction project of Temple Judea, a two-story, 20,000-square-foot synagogue that is already underway, the board opted to solve a small piece of a complicated puzzle. Board members voted unanimously Tuesday night to direct Temple Judea to widen Rogers Road in front of its property by about eight feet and leave the rest of the improvements to occur when future developments are approved.
