Borough residents are encouraged to sign up for Doylestown's email messaging system and follow boro officials on Twitter.
Huddled in the dark, with no power, no heat, and sometimes no water, Doylestown-area residents clung to their mobile devices as lifelines to information during Superstorm Sandy. Doylestown Borough officials used several social media outlets to get information out to residents. They are encouraging residents to sign up for the distribution lists now, before the next emergency. The borough's email notification system, called Dmail, and its Twitter account gained hundreds of new followers during Hurricane Sandy, officials said Monday night. "Many people joined in the midst of the storm," borough manager John Davis said during Monday night's council meeting. "We encourage everyone to go to our website, sign up for D-mail, find our Twitter page…

Lucy shows how easy it is to make major blunders on this popular social networking site.
I admit it, I’m addicted to Facebook. I love it because I’ve connected with old friends from high school, am able to see pictures from my family who live all over the south and west, network with others in my field, and the list goes on. It’s been a blessing to me and many others. Then again, I didn’t get nicknamed “Lucy” for nothing. Like my red-headed namesake, I manage to get myself into all kinds of sticky situations. Facebook proved no different. In fact, it proved to be a welcoming haven for me and others like me, to get into trouble. One of the things I discovered is to be careful before hitting the enter button. I’ve done my best proofreading after I’ve posted something to my wall. Being a heroine in a play and being ON heroin are …

The district hopes new guidelines will help avoid messy situations like the Natalie Munroe incident.
The Central Bucks School Board Tuesday night took a giant step forward in establishing a policy that will fundamentally change the way district employees – especially teachers – interact with students and their parents. Known as the "Electronic Communications and Social Media/Networking" policy -- and prompted by the furor over Central Bucks teacher Natalie Munroe and her infamous blog that made national news -- the document spells out in detail what constitutes improper use of technology by district employees. The punishment for violations could include everything up to and including termination, as well as reports to law enforcement agencies. Last month, the board approved changes to its Freedom of Speech in Non-School Settings for …

Local business leaders got tips on using social media to their advantage.
Put together three social media experts who talk very fast, and you are certain to get two things: exceptional information on using modern communication tools to connect to clients, friends and family, and about three hours’ worth of advice, suggestions and spot-on expertise in under 75 minutes. The Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce recently presented “Connecting with Your Clients: Building Your Social Media Strategy,” a free program to help individuals and businesses get the most out of their social media efforts. "Most businesses fail with social media,” says Kristin Kane, Director of Social Media & Recruiting for Kane Partners’ new Social Media Division in Lansdale and one of the morning’s panelists. That’s because, she avers, they get …

A contest heavy on social media tools and winning nifty gadgets will be available to visitors to Bucks County starting Friday.
Sure, the folks at the Visit Bucks County want folks to come to the area this summer and have a great time. But this summer, they want more. They want visitors to check in on Foursquare, contribute reviews to Trip Advisor and Foodspotting, take and e-mail photos and, in general, share their experiences via social media. What’s in it for visitors? Well, how about an Amazon Kindle, or an iPad or a digital camera? It’s the center’s “Unforgetaways” contest that starts Friday and runs all the way through Labor Day. The contest is an acknowledgement that social media is changing the way people decide to spend their time and money. “We want to interact with people through social media this tourist season,” said Paul Bencivengo, Director of …

In the hopes of becoming more tech savvy, nearly 50 local businesses turned out for a conference in Doylestown.
As the number of U.S. adults who use social networking sites grows, so does the need for local businesses to understand and harness the power of such sites. Business leaders from around the area gathered recently in Doylestown to learn how to do just that. Organized by local media guru and Doylestown native, Chuck Hall, the FTW (or, For The Win) Conference explained the importance of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and more to growing a business. "FTWcon enabled us to get together in person to share valuable ideas and insights that help us personally and professionally," Hall said. "It was amazing to look around the room and realize that all types of business people and professionals were sharing their collective …
