About Town

PHOTOS: Doylestown's Holiday Finery

Before the holidays are over for good, share your photos here.

If the lights and the tinsel and the ornaments aren't down already, they will be soon, no doubt. So before the holiday season is over for another year, share your photos here.

The Brunette Lucy

Getting Ready for Christmas

Lucy remembers Christmas traditions with her family as she also says goodbye to Patch.

I hand it to all of you who venture out into the world on Black Friday. The day after Thanksgiving, I can barely rouse myself out of bed due to the turkey, stuffing and pie-induced coma I’m in. So to anyone who managed to get up early (or who camped out before the stores opened) to battle the throngs of bargain seekers, I salute you. For me, one of the best things about the holiday is that it marks the beginning of the Christmas season. Obviously, Black Friday shoppers feel the same way. The tree goes up that weekend, and I’ll watch every sappy Christmas movie ever made – twice – while I decorate and bake. The kids usually take bets on how long it’ll be before I start to cry, and then spy on me until a winner is proclaimed. But the most …

Discover How to Park for Free in Doylestown

Print this out and tape it to the dashboard of your car, if you drive to downtown Doylestown often.

There you are, staring at the parking meter, on Presidents Day. "No charge for Sunday and listed holidays." Except that no "list" of holidays is posted on the meter in downtown Doylestown. So do you plunk in a dime or two, or take the chance that Hank, Ian and Dana won't catch up with you? Look no further. We are here to help. After a few too many (read: four) close encounters of the parking ticket kind, we here at Doylestown Patch have developed some expert downtown parking strategies. Chief among them was figuring out when you don't have to feed the metal beast because it's a holiday. So, without further ado, here are the holidays which Doylestown Borough does not enforce the parking meters: New Year's Day Martin Luther King, Jr. Day …

Doylestown Museums Celebrate the Season

Both Mercer and Michener museums held their annual open houses Tuesday night.

It seemed half of Doylestown turned out for the annual Holiday Open House sponsored jointly by both Mercer and Michener museums Tuesday night. If you weren’t in a festive mood before, you surely must have been by the time you left. With seasonal entertainment provided by local talents, the soft lights of flickering luminarias lining walkways, the scents of hot cider mingling with embers created by a nicely-stoked bonfire all point toward a perfect December night. Mercer’s executive director Doug Dolan was stationed outside at the bonfire where the annual “burning of the greens” takes place. Visitors toss evergreen branches onto the hot fire and the symbolic gesture allows you to “wish your troubles away” in hopes of a better new year to …

Last Chance for First Friday

Doylestown's final First Friday of 2010 offers the usual fun, plus the chance to tackle that holiday shopping list.

Attention, Doylestown shoppers: This is your last First Friday before Christmas to stock up on goodies for your BFF or your favorite aunt. Tonight, you can enjoy the seasonal decorations and window displays downtown - look for the yellow and black flags that mark businesses participating in First Friday - and you also can cross some items off your holiday shopping list. If you're looking for one-of-a-kind gifts, the artisans at the Lowborn Art Gallery just might have a piece of artwork to fit the bill. Area artists will be selling everything from photographs to digital image artwork to jewelry at the gallery, which is at the Main Street Baptist Church each month on First Friday. Some of the Lowborn's artisans include: A software engineer …

Holiday Happenings

Santa visits and tree and menorah lightings beckon as we enter a busy time of year.

OK, Thanksgiving's over. Time to change holidays. And DoylestownPatch is here to help. We've showcased events taking place in the area in the next week to help you jump-start your holiday season celebrations. No time like the present to get started. We wouldn't want you to miss a thing! Santa has a busy slate today. But what better way to work off yesterday's turkey feast! In Doylestown Township, he'll be arriving at 4:30 p.m. via helicopter to The Market by Shady Brook Farm at Delaware Valley College, 2100 Lower State Road. Once he's landed, stay for awhile and enjoy a Holiday Open House with food and wine samplings. A crackling bonfire and a wagon ride around a portion of the college campus will make you feel like you're in the middle of…

Sharing the Gift of Giving

Operation Santa volunteers helped pack items to be sent overseas for the holidays to military members in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was chaos. It was frenzy. But underlying the bedlam going on Thursday afternoon in the cafeteria of Central Bucks East High School was a sense of real gratitude. The cafeteria was ground zero for sorting and packing donations to Operation Santa-USMC, which delivers "Christmas in a box" to soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the holiday season. Volunteers of all ages and from various community groups came out to help get the items packaged and ready for shipping. Last year, about 2 1/2 tons of stocking stuffers, food, medicines, games, books and more were shipped overseas from Doylestown, according to local coordinator Katie Maio, whose son, Kyle, is in ready reserves with the U.S. Marines. Michelle Parks' son, Billy, …
