As many people still are keeping tight hold of their pocket books, even the charity used book sale is lowering its prices this year. The Friends of the Library's annual used book sale, which kicks off at the library in Doylestown this weekend, is lowering its prices for nearly all of the thousands of books that will be for sale. "Given the still depressed state of our economy, and the mission of the Friends of the Library to support the community and encourage reading, we have a new price policy so books can be more accessible to all," said Maria Martino Evans, of the Friends group. This year, for the first time ever, all books will be $1, Evans said, with the exception of a few special antique or coffee-table type volumes. Young childrens…

Kids keep a summer reading log and can win weekly prizes, with a shot at the grand prizes of a Kindle Fire or a trip to the Great Wolf Lodge.
When Linden Elementary students left school last week, they went home with a special message from librarian Mike Wolf. Reading over the summer would help them retain the skills they had spent all year learning - and the Doylestown library's summer reading program was a great way to make that reading fun. On Saturday, the Doylestown library will host a special event to kick off that annual program. The theme for 2012 is "Dream Big - READ!" "It’s to keep kids reading over the summer, but to do it in a fun way," said Katie Ringenbach, Youth Services Librarian at the Doylestown branch. All seven branches of the Bucks County Free Library system will be running a summer reading program, said Bonnie White, branch manager at the Doylestown library…

“Lt. Edwin Fretz” returned to Doylestown Saturday to share his exploits and those of his fellow soldiers during the Civil War. Dressed as Fretz, Richard Neddenriep led the first Friends of the Library program of the year. He regaled a packed house with stories of a Doylestown that, in 1860, had only 1,800 residents, a brand new train station and a militia that met weekly to drill in Camp Lacey – now, Central Bucks West’s War Memorial Field. He told of 100 residents who went served time briefly in a Washington, D.C., that “was much like Doylestown, with dusty streets, open sewers, clapboard houses and animals in the streets.” A week after their first engagement concluded, they answered President Lincoln’s call for 500,000 soldiers and a …
