As 'highly sought after collectibles,' Dr. Lori takes a look at Christmas Cards from the President and family over the years.
President Ulysses S. Grant made Christmas Day (Dec. 25) a national holiday in 1870. From that point forward, a Christmas card from the White House was a special keepsake. While these cards are highly sought after collectibles, these coveted Christmas cards are rare and do not come to the antiques and collectibles market without a high sales value. Here is a look at some of the facts surrounding the official holiday card from the President of the United States. President Truman took office after President Roosevelt’s death in April of 1945. As World War II came to an end and Christmas of 1945 was upon the nation, the mood was ripe for a great big holiday celebration. The Truman White House sent out official, yet conservative White House …

Despite steady rain, many local families visited the Bucks County Visitor Center in Bensalem last night hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa and Mrs. Claus, who dropped by to magically turn on the Christmas lights and take photos with good little boys and girls. Santa arrived via a Bensalem fire engine and thrilled the children in attendance, who also had cookies and apple juice for snacks. All were entertained by Bob Egan playing holiday favorites on the piano. If you didn't make it out last night, Santa will return to take photos with children from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays: Nov. 27, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11. On Dec. 11, Santa will stay for an extra hour until 4 p.m. to take pictures with pets. Be sure to bring your own camera. In addition to Santa'…

The age-old tradition of placing luminarias on display on Christmas Eve is alive and well in the area.
In your travels on Christmas Eve, you may see patches of glowing, golden lights dotting streets and driveways. These luminarias are a centuries-old tradition of symbolically lighting the way for the Christ child on Christmas Eve. Regardless of your religious beliefs, the practice, especially done on a large scale, is a beautiful display to behold. It's a yuletide custom at least one neighborhood near the Furlong area of Buckingham has been dependably continuing for almost 30 years. Jean Eble has been the longtime coordinator of the luminaria distribution for the 39 single-family homes along Cloverly Drive. This year, she passed the baton to neighbor Patti Crossland. "We started it as a neighborhood celebration," recalled Eble, after seeing…

The popular event has grown in the three years since the Warrington church began offering it as a fundraiser. This year, 36 bakers contributed 44 varieties of cookies.
Got a hankering for a good, old-fashioned Sugar Cookie? Maybe your sweet tastes are set on some Russian Tea Balls or Peanut Butter Blossoms. Or you might want to feed your chocolate cravings with Chocolate Peppermint Oreo Truffles or Fiesta Fudge Cookies. For a brief hour Saturday morning, the church hall at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Warrington was filled with men, women and the occasional child all on a quest for sugary treats to fill their holiday dessert tables – and maybe a few tummies - before the holidays arrive. They came for a Cookie Walk. To the uninitiated, that means the organizers hand you a disposable glove and plastic container and you grab as many cookies as you want. Don't like nuts? Not a problem. Skip over the…

The local theater troupe will perform a Christmas-themed show in the style of the era when radio was the entertainment of choice.
Imagine what it was like before television and (gasp!) the Internet. Imagine, if you will, the golden years of radio, when only the Shadow knows and Burns and Allen reigned in the realm of comedy. Take a trip back to yesteryear this weekend as a local theater troupe recreates that same atmosphere. A Very Town & Country Christmas, presented by Buckingham's Town & Country Players, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in the James-Lorah Memorial Home, 132 N. Main St., Doylestown. John Zimmerman likens it to a version of Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, but with a Christmas theme. Zimmerman is the troupe's president and also plays the host of the program. The radio theme took hold at last year's holiday performance, …
