Bucks County Classic Caps UCI Cycling Tour

The 103-mile road race through Central Bucks County on Saturday concluded the 2012 UCI America Tour.

The Bucks County Classic crown went to a kiwi Saturday but the overall tour crown went to an Aussie. Patrick Bevin, of New Zealand, won the inaugural Thompson Bucks County Classic, racing for Bissell Pro Cycling. Bevin finished the strenuous 103-mile course in 4 hours, 12 minutes, 31.4 seconds. But the race through the rolling hills of beautiful Bucks also capped the 2012 UCI America Tour, a series of races held from Canada to Argentina. Maximiliano Richeze (Team Nippo) led the individual standings heading into the Bucks County race with 166 points, reported VeloNews. Rory Sutherland (UnitedHealthcare) was in second with 158.8 points, and 2011 America Tour champion Miguel Ubeto (Androni Giocattoli-Venezuela) was third with 150 points. On…

First, huge thanks to The Thompson Organization for their hard work and financial support for this event. Great job! Also want to thank local law enforcement. Great job officers. Really appreciate your time and effort. I pedaled through most of the course, stopping for chow at Carversviile General, Lumberville General, and Applejacks. Great food and lots of happy people. I also had a chance to …   more ›

21st Annual Arts Fest Returns to Doylestown

The largest event of the year is happening this weekend in downtown Doylestown.

More than 150 artisans will be selling their wares and talking to browsers about their work this weekend on the streets of downtown Doylestown. The heart of town is closed to traffic as it is transformed into an open-air market of creativity. Jewelry, textiles, painting, sculpture - all will be on display and ready to take home. The free family-friendly event is the largest on the town's social calendar, and draws thousands of people to town each year. It also is a dog-friendly event, and well-behaved pooches are welcome to attend with their human companions. It is sponsored by the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance, an all-volunteer, not-for-profit group that runs several programs to beautify and promote the borough. It runs …

Streets to be Closed for Bike Race, Arts Fest

Several downtown streets will be closed this weekend.

Driving through Doylestown will be challenging this weekend, as several events taking place downtown will force the closure of borough streets. The annual Doylestown Arts Festival returns to the borough this weekend, running Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival takes place along State and Main Streets, along with West Oakland Avenue and Hamilton Street. On Saturday, the finish line of the inaugural Bucks County Classic cycling road race will wind through the borough, as well, finishing at Court and Main streets. On Sunday, the Doylestown Criterium, the second event of the Bucks County Classic, takes place on a loop around the downtown area.   Here are the detailed road closures, courtesy of race organizers Sparta …

Local Families Make Cyclists Feel at Home

As Central Bucks prepares for the inaugural Bucks County Classic this weekend, local families are opening their homes to some of the "starving artists" of the cycling circuit.

When Tom Zirbel took second place in the 2011 Univest Grand Prix, he had a special cheering section from Doylestown in the crowd. Kim Rainey and Scott Nichols opened their Doylestown home to Zirbel as part of a host family program for cyclists participating in the professional bike race, which had been held in the Souderton area through last year. Now, as the race becomes the Thompson Bucks County Classic, on a course from New Hope to Doylestown, organizers hope to strengthen and increase participation in the host family program in future years. The goal of the program is to help racers keep their costs low. "There are wealthy teams, with fancy schmany stuff, and I guess they stay in hotels," Rainey said recently. "But there are a lot of …

Bucks County Classic Will Race Into Doylestown Area in September

Formerly sponsored by Univest in the Souderton area, the bike race is being resurrected and moved to Central Bucks County.

Come September, cycling fans will have a new professional bike race to flock to - the Bucks County Classic, which organizers hope will become one of the largest events hosted in the county each year. The Bucks County Classic will plot a course through some of the most beautiful countryside and towns Bucks has to offer: Doylestown and New Hope boroughs and Plumstead, Buckingham and Solebury townships. The new race, which will debut this September, grew out of the ashes of the now-defunct Univest Grand Prix. For years, that event comprised a Saturday professional race in Montgomery County and a Sunday circuit race around Doylestown. When it ended last year, officials started getting ideas. "We very quickly came to the conclusion that Bucks …
