Early Tuesday afternoon, Bucks County Commissioner Chairman Robert Loughery joined Director of Special Projects Joseph Bush and representatives from Carroll Engineering and Blooming Glen Contractors, Inc. to re-open Bucks County Bridge No. 162. The bridge, built in 1954, is a 28-foot long by 30-foor wide single span steel beam bridge with an open grid steel deck. It carries Street Road over Pidcock Creek along the border of Buckingham and Solebury Townships and was closed back in May 2012, due to significant structural deterioration discovered during a regularly scheduled biennial bridge inspection. The scope of the bridge rehabilitation consisted of replacement of the bridges steel beams and bearings, reconstruction of the abutment …

No one was injured when part of a building under construction in Buckingham collapsed this weekend.
No one apparently was injured when part of a building under construction in Buckingham collapsed over the weekend. It happened on Heritage Center Drive off of York Road in Buckingham Township, near the Temple Fox Chase Buckingham Cancer Center, according to responding firefighters. Shortly after 9 a.m. on Saturday, Bucks County Radio asked firefighters to investigate a possible building collapse that had occurred during the overnight hours. Lingohocken Fire Co. Chief Greg Jakubowski arrived at the scene to find a portion of Building 600 that was under construction in the business center there had collapsed. Jakubowski said there were no apparent injuries. The Buckingham Township building official/fire marshal and the property owner were …

Did you see something strange in the sky over Hearthstone Saturday night?
A Doylestown Patch reader wrote in late Saturday night to report a strange sight. She said she saw about nine orange lights in the sky as she and her family were driving on Cold Spring Creamery Road. "We all saw at least nine orange lights in close proximity to each other and moving perilously close to one another in and out of a kind of formation," she wrote. "They hung around for at least a couple of minutes. Suddenly the majority broke away and very quickly disappeared, while two traveled in our direction (we turned into the Hearthstone development where we live) for a while and disappeared just as fast." She wasn't the only one who saw them. Another Hearthstone neighbor reported seeing the same lights. "I thought we were being invaded…

The jolly man in the red suit enlisted the help of Midway firefighters, who handed out candy canes to those greeting Santa.
All you kids in Buckingham don’t have to worry whether Santa knows where you live. He does for sure. He took a dry run of his Christmas Eve tour on Saturday afternoon with the help of some longtime friends. He stopped by Midway Volunteer Fire Co. and enlisted some of his stalwart buddies to make the rounds of neighborhoods such as Hearthstone, Fireside and Cold Spring Hunt, to name a few, handing out candy canes and giving season’s greetings to those who heard him coming. “I’m a bit hot right now,” Santa, dressed in his fur-trimmed outfit said at the station prior to his trek. (Once you’ve gotten used to those arctic temperatures, you know, it takes time to deal with other climates.) He was rewarded later in the afternoon with some snow …

With temperatures in the low 80s and sunny skies, people were making the most of the gorgeous day.
Outside was clearly the place to be over the weekend. The rain that never seemed to end finally gave us a break, and, boy, did we ever take advantage of it. We’re definitely in fall, but summer’s last hurrah these past few days didn’t go unnoticed. Roads were packed with cars and motorcycles traveling to get to their destinations – be it shopping, visiting some of the area’s parks or pumpkin patches, or just taking a Sunday drive to see some of the fall sights. DoylestownPatch was out and about in Buckingham Sunday, too. We made a stop at neighboring Bowman’s Hill Tower to check out the progress of the leaves, which are just hinting at changing colors. Our guess is it’ll be a great spot to view the foliage again in another week or two. …

The grand prize of $10,000 went to a New Britain man.
A handful of people got pretty lucky by attending Midway’s annual carnival – despite the heat wave and spate of summer storms that may have kept some carnival-goers holed up in their air-conditioned homes. As always, raffles were held each night of the event, sponsored as a fundraiser for Midway Volunteer Fire Co. in Buckingham. “People came out each of the nights, despite the weather, but it definitely had an effect” on turnout, said Midway president David Hathaway. A break in the weather on the carnival’s last day, with the stickiness factor replaced by lower humidity, made temperatures feel more comfortable, bringing out “just a ton of people,” he said. Turns out Greg German had more than the weather in his favor July 30. The New …

Enjoy rides, games and food while helping your local firefighters.
If it’s July, it’s carnival time in Buckingham. Each year since 1931, Midway Volunteer Fire Company has hosted a carnival to help raise money for its organization. Aside from the fire company’s annual fund drive, this is the only other way the volunteer group fundraises during the course of the year, said president David Hathaway. This year’s carnival starts Thursday, July 21 at 6:30 and will be open through Saturday, and then again Thursday, July 28 to Saturday, July 30. As always, it’s held on Midway’s property across from Holicong Park on Route 202. With lots of amusement rides, games of chance, Bingo, a country store that sells secondhand treasures, nightly drawings for prizes and, of course, food served on the patio by the fire …

Parades, old-time activities, music and, of course, fireworks will help celebrate the summer holiday.
Ready for the Big Weekend? Get your grills fired up, bring out your sparklers and get set to celebrate the birth of the United States. We’ve found lots going on in the Doylestown area over the four-day weekend. So chill on your patio or venture out to see some of the patriotic spectacles that are in store, including some great fireworks displays. If you’re REAL lucky, you may even get to see them from your own backyard. Here’s what’s going on: It’s a bit out of the area, but, hey, when it’s fireworks, we’ll go the extra mile. Every Friday night until Labor Day weekend (weather permitting), New Hope and Lambertville sponsor Friday Night Fireworks over the Delaware River. The festivities begin at 9:30 p.m., and a special guest each week …

Peace Valley Lavender Farm is awash in purple right now. The healing and culinary herb is at its floral peak.
Visitors stopping by Peace Valley Lavender Farm right now will behold a pleasing scene of beautiful plants casting just a whisper of purple on the rural landscape. Inhale and you’ll be inundated with a heady fragrance that has been perfuming the air since biblical times. Visuals and scents aside, you may also experience a sense of peace and well-being while you’re there. It’s one of the many attributes for which the age-old plant is recognized. “Lavender is known for its calming and soothing effects,” explained Patti Lyons, who, with her husband, George, owns the New Britain Township farm that overlooks Lake Galena and Peace Valley Park. This is the high season for the herb, which is a member of the mint family. Bees and butterflies are …

The ancient ritual was captured in photographs by parishioner Chet Heinz.
Members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church celebrated Mass Sunday in their new home – it’s first official Sabbath following the church’s dedication ceremony the day before. The process of building the 1,200-seat church in Buckingham has taken 11 years – ever since the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced it would form a new parish for the area. Chet Heinz, a church parishioner who has been chronicling the building process in photographs for Guadalupe’s website, graciously submitted some additional photos of Saturday’s Rite of Dedication – a religious ritual as ancient as the Roman Catholic Church is itself and filled with symbolism. It begins with the new building being presented to Justin Cardinal Rigali, archbishop of …
