Fanny Says: Don't Drive Them Out

Fanny gives advice to neighbors bothered by a bar.

Dear Fanny: We are eight families who share a block in downtown Doylestown with a popular bar. There is not too much noise at night while the bar is open, except during the summer when people sit at outside tables But when the bar closes at 2 a.m., our neighborhood is "invaded" by noisy, sometimes drunken patrons. Many of us have been awakened by loud, often obscene arguments and yelling. People (men, as far as we know) sometimes relieve themselves on our front sidewalks or steps. We often find broken beer bottles in the street in the morning. We have complained to the bar owner, but he says he is not responsible for what patrons do after they leave his place. When we call the police, the drunks scatter as soon as they see the patrol car. …
