This mom around town is planning back to school lunches and has some tips to share.
Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas. Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips. Elise S., a Cinnaminson mom of two, told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a circle with no crusts.” Kids love the “no crust” sandwiches but…
Lucy waxes poetic about the summer months for all parents; homeschooler or not.
Matt and I have homeschooled our children for years. So when summer comes around, I don’t know who’s more excited – us or them. After the last test is graded, we throw on Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out for Summer” and then dance around like a bunch of drunken sailors. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing to do for a few months. I want to clarify; we don’t homeschool because we think teachers aren’t doing a good job. On the contrary, we think teachers have the hardest job out there these days. When I was younger, if your teacher looked at you cross-eyed, you were nervous; bullies were thrown out on their bullying rear ends. These days, teachers are asked to be teacher, friend, parent, babysitter, nurse, mentor, role model, and a host of other …

This first day of school offers up a speed bump for this mom.
Bringing her home from the hospital was one of the most terrifying rides of our lives. Her father drove about 11 miles an hour. Down Ferry Road. With his flashers on. I sat in the backseat with her and her big brother, staring at her tiny face and checking to make sure she was still breathing. Moms and dads do that, even with healthy newborns. But my little girl had been born at 31 weeks, and was teeny, tiny. She weighed four pounds when she was born, and not much more than that when we took her home from Doylestown Hospital's NICU three weeks later. So how is it that now, nearly six years later, she is 40 pounds of sheer determination and sass, barreling down the sidewalk toward her latest adventure – kindergarten. How time flies. …

Get your kids’ brains working again with this fun, free daily email newsletter of math problems.
Central Bucks School District students go back to school on Sept. 4, which means it’s time for school supplies, backpacks full of textbooks and dreaded questions about math homework. With back-to-school stresses piling up, Laura Overdeck wants to let children and parents in on a little secret: math can be fun. Really. Overdeck is on a mission to change the way Americans think about math — especially given that math anxiety has been observed in kids as young as 5 years old. This is what inspired her to create Bedtime Math, a nonprofit that sends out a daily email with a math problem tailored to “wee ones,” little and big kids. Overdeck, of Short Hills, N.J., is an astrophysics graduate and MBA. Her love of math started long ago, by …

Check out these tips for packing healthy, inexpensive school lunches for your kids as they head back to school.
As kids prepare to head back to school, moms and dads start thinking about handling a new year's worth of school lunches. School lunch prices in the Central Bucks School District range from $2.35 at the elementary schools to $3.20 for a "premium" lunch at the middle and high schools. Click here to see cafeteria menus for September. CBSD lunches usually consist of three or four main-course options with sides of fruits and veggies and a beverage. If you choose to pack your child’s lunch, you naturally have more control over what your child is eating, and you can pack his or her favorites. You can also be sure your child’s lunch meets any special dietary needs (like food allergies) by packing it yourself. Try to mix it up. If you pack your …
