2. On this day in 1907, John Wayne was born in Winterset, IA. His role in the 1939 Stagecoach launched his cowboy career, transforming the journeyman actor into perhaps the most recognized personification of the Old West. Wayne, whose birth name was Marion Michael Morrison, won an Oscar for True Grit in 1969.

3. Batter Up! takes place today at 4:30 p.m. at Turk Park. First, second and third place winners in each category win a Phillies plaque, and winners will go on to a regional competition.
