Buckingham Group Awards Scholarship

CB East senior Lee Sandquist is the first recipient of what the group hopes is an annual program.

Central Bucks East graduating senior Lee Sandquist has been awarded the first ever scholarship from the Buckingham Township Civic Association.

Sandquist was awarded the $500 scholarship on June 2, during awards night at the high school in Buckingham.

"Lee has demonstrated all the qualities that the association sought—outstanding grades, leadership skills, good character, and a record of community service locally, nationally and even internationally," said Jan Tompkins, president of the civic association.

Sandquist, who is headed to Bates College in Maine, has been active in several service clubs during his years at CB East.

As a freshman, he was a founding member of the school's Interact Club, which supports organizations as diverse as the New Britain Food Larder and the Maasai Cultural Exchange in Kenya.

As a junior, he helped with the fundraising and organization for a 12-day student service trip to Nicaragua which supported sustainable agriculture and reforestation, Tompkins said, and when Ohio flooded in 2008, he spent a week helping with home restoration projects.

Here at home, Sandquist suggested that Buckingham work with CB East's See Green Club to promote awareness of land preservation, "so that community involvement in preserving green spaces begins early," Tompkins said. "Lee’s suggestion fits perfectly with the efforts of the BTCA to keep Buckingham green."

Begun in 1952, the Buckingham Township Civic Association is active in the community and sponsors the popular on Saturday mornings in the borough.
