New Britain Borough Property Taxes Going Up

New Britain Borough's property tax rate will increase by

The average homeowner in New Britain Borough will pay about $61 more this year in municipal property taxes.

After holding the line on taxes in 2011, council members in December approved a rate increase of about 11 percent.

That means the owner of a house assessed at the borough average of $24,400 will pay a local property tax bill of $595 in 2013. That's a $61 increase from 2012's bill of $534.

New Britain Borough's tax rate will increase by 2.5 from 21.875 mills to 24.375 mills.

The borough's budget for 2013 stands at $1,687,333, Mayor David Holewinski said.

The tax increase was needed to keep pace with the borough's increases in costs, he said.

"Our average expenses between 2006 and 2011 had increased by an average of $46,000 per year," Holewinski told Doylestown Patch, adding that the tax rate has increased by an average of 1.43 mills per year or about $44,900. "We are close to keeping pace with our increases in cost."
