More Parking Changes Proposed for Doylestown

The Main Street corridor could lose some parking spots and gain others.

Doylestown's Main Street corridor could lose some parking spaces but gain two others if borough council members adopt two new parking-related ordinances.

Two ordinances outlining the changes will be advertised soon; the changes are scheduled to be on the council's agenda for its April 25 meeting.

One major change includes eliminating parking on South Main Street in these locations:

  • from the intersection with Hillside Avenue north for 65 feet on the east side of the street
  • from the intersection with Hart Avenue north for 89 feet on the west side of the street

Those changes are in response to concerns that came out of the South Main Street Corridor Study, council member Dennis McCauley said. That study determined that parked cars make it difficult for drivers at those intersections to accurately judge passing traffic.

That ordinance also creates one 15-minute free parking space on South Main just north of Hart Avenue, in the vicinity of .

A second ordinance would create a similar 15-minute free parking space on East State near the intersection of State and Main, near .

McCauley said Ali Nejad, who owns the rug shop that has been in business since 1985, requested the space. A short-term free parking space might make it easier for trucks making deliveries to and picking orders up from the store, Nejad reasoned.

But the new free space would be public and open to anyone, said McCauley, who chairs the borough's public safety committee.

The two proposed 15-minute spaces join many others across Doylestown that offer free parking for a short time in order to encourage quick turnover in business areas where parking is in high demand.
