Body Found in Canal Matches Missing Woman's Description

A body found Wednesday in the canal in Lambertville matches the description of missing New Hope bartender Sarah Majoras, authorities announced.

Anthony P. Kearns said investigators will work with the medical examiner's office to positively identify the body and determine the cause and manner of death.

But Kearns, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor heading the investigation into Majoras' disappearance, said officials will continue to work to discover how the woman died.

"There’s nothing to indicate that there’s been foul play," Kearns said during a 6 p.m. press conference, the second of the day.

A New Jersey State Police diver discovered a brown leather boot earlier Wednesday afternoon in the Delaware & Raritan Canal.

Then, at 4:50 p.m., additional divers discovered a woman's body in the canal near the lock south of Bridge Street in Lambertville, Kearns said.

He implored the public to come forward with more information that might help them determine exactly what happened to the well-loved woman, whom friends have described as sassy and strong.

Friends, acquaintances and even strangers have flocked to New Hope, PA, and Lambertville, NJ, over the past four days to search for Majoras.

As word spread of Wednesday's discovery, they flocked again to the Facebook page created by one of Majoras' friends. Originally started to coordinate the volunteer search for her, the page now bears hundreds of messages of condolence.

"It's excruciatingly hard to say that the search for Sarah might be over but we can not abandon the family that we have created over the past 4 days and for most - over the past 16 years," writes the page's administrator. "This community is testament alone to the overwhelming Love that we had for Sarah, the same Love that she showed all of us day in and day out.

"We ask that you reflect and grieve and reach out for support if you need it," the message said.

Majoras, a bartender at John and Peter's bar in New Hope, was last seen at 2 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, leaving John and Peter's after spending time there with friends on her night off.

She left on foot to walk back to North Union Street in Lambertville, where she lived with her boyfriend, Adam Baker, a routine she had followed many times before.

Video cameras captured her crossing the bridge and turning onto Lambert Lane, but Majoras never made it home.

She was reported missing to Lambertville police around 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and authorities and friends began searching for her, canvassing the town on foot, sending divers into the frigid waters of the canal and scouring the area from above by helicopter.
