Police Warn of Phone Scam

Someone purporting to be from the federal government is trying to get financial information from residents by claiming they won a cash prize.

Doylestown Township police on Tuesday warned residents to be wary of phone calls purporting to offer a cash prize.

Police said that a township resident came into the police station to report that he had received two phone calls from a Washington D.C. area phone number. The caller told the man he was calling from the federal government and that the resident had won $7,000, police said.

The caller, a woman, then asked the resident for his credit card number; she told him she needed the number so he could collect his winnings.

When the man told the caller that he didn't have a credit card, she then asked for his bank checking or savings account numbers.

"The resident told the caller his children do not let him give that information out," police said in a statement Tuesday. "The caller then advised him he "lost" the money and hung up."

When she called back the next day, police said she asked for the man's adult son, who also lives at the house.

The calls came in at 5:10 p.m. on Monday and 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, police said. The call originated from phone number 202-607-2068, they said. Police investigating the incident said Googling that phone number reveals numerous complaints posted online by other people who have been called by the same number and told they "won" $7,000 .

Police warned that all residents should beward of the potential ID crime and fraud.
