Area Firefighters Rescue Woman From Smashed Car

Rescuers had to extricate her from the car lodged under a semi-tractor trailer in the crash on Route 313.

A driver had to be extricated from her car after a crash that left the car smashed underneath a semi-tractor trailer Tuesday evening.

The crash occurred on Rt. 313 (Swamp Road) at Maple Avenue in Doylestown.

Lt. Pat Penecale, of the Doylestown Borough Police Department, said Wednesday it appears that the driver drove into the truck.

"The driver of the car drove through the stop sign at Maple and 313 and drove out under the truck," Penecale said. "The car was then dragged for a distance down the road."

The driver of the car was pinned in the crash and required the help of emergency responders to be extricated from the wreckage. It took more than 40 minutes for rescuers to free her from the crumpled car.

Central Bucks Ambulance transported her from the scene to a park in the borough's Maplewood neighborhood, where a helicopter was waiting. She then was airlifted to a hospital, reportedly Temple University's trauma center.

Emergency responders at the scene said the woman was alert, awake and talking throughout the rescue.

"The good part is, it sounds like she wasn't seriously hurt," Penecale said.

Fire companies from Doylestown, Warrington, Midway and Plumsteadville responded to the crash.

Plumsteadville Fire Company's ladder truck was brought to the scene so police could use the bucket to take aerial photos to aid in the accident investigation.
