A gas line damaged during the fire burned for hours, even after most of the fire inside the homes had been brought under control. A PECO spokeswoman said at the time that the company's crews were able to get the gas service to two of the homes turned off quickly, but the fire in the other line was allowed to burn until workers could safely clamp the line to shut off the flow of gas.

That night, neighbors saw McKissock flee her burning home. But after the extent of her injuries became clear, she had to be airlifted to Temple University, which has a specialized treatment center for such injuries, the Temple Burn Center.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
