Arrest Made in Canal Towpath Sexual Assault

A New Hope man allegedly engaged in lewd conversation and groped another man on July 1.

A New Hope man has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault on the Delaware Canal Towpath earlier this month, Solebury Township police announced.

A sketch that was publicized following the July 1 incident led police to Peter J. Markowicz, 56. He has been charged with simple assault and open lewdness. 

Markowicz was arraigned Tuesday in front of District Court Judge M. Snow, who set bail at $25,000. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 4.

According to police, an adult male told police he was sexually assaulted by another man who was riding a bike along the along the Delaware River Canal Towpath. The incident occurred in Washington Crossing Park near the Thompson Neely House, according to police. 

The victim told police Markowicz approached him and engaged in a lewd conversation prior to groping him.
