The Dogs Days of Summer Bite The Elderly

It's August - traditionally the hottest month of summer, yet July is now being recorded as the hottest month since 1872. What will August bring?

Nine deaths in the Philadelphia area are being blamed on the heat so far, all of them seniors. While the heat and humidity can be dangerous for all of us, it is especially so for the elderly.

Elderly people do not adjust well to sudden changes in temperature. Going from the air conditioning to the outdoors can be not just very uncomfortable, but dangerous.

They are more likely to have chronic medical conditions that upset the normal body responses to heat. And they're more likely to take prescription medications that impair the body's ability to regulate temperature or that inhibit perspiration.

There are also habits and behaviors that can prove dangerous in the heat. Having survived the Depression, most seniors are frugal. Between that and the cost of electricity, it's no wonder so many are reluctant to turn on the air conditioning!

Because of problems with incontinence or frequent nighttime urination, many seniors are reluctant to take in fluids. Additionally, as one ages, we feel thirsty less often, although our need for fluid actually increases.

Combine all this with ailments or mobility issues that make it difficult to get to the refrigerator for cold drinks, empty ice cube trays or turn on the fan and or AC.

This dangerous situation is made more dangerous when you consider it's the most popular vacation month. Family and friends who would ordinarly be there to check in, aren't. Power outages and severe summer storms aren't uncommon.

It's important that you or someone you trust have contact daily with your senior loved  one - more than once daily if they are ill. It is essential that all seniors have either a cell phone or portable phone that they can keep with them.

Ensure that there are plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages in the fridge with a back-up supply near-by. Don't buy the large size which can be too heavy for a senior with arthritic hands to lift and pour.

Make sure the air conditioner or fan is in good working order and easy to get to. You might want to invest in one of the new models that has a remote control handset.

If you're going on vacation and want to know your loved one is being cared for, Home Instead does offer a vacation respite special that will allow you to vacation with peace of mind.

Check in on elderly neighbors who might not have anyone nearby. Offer to walk their dog, collect their mail and put out the trash. These very small gestures just might save a life!
