Sound Off: Does Shirt Demean Girls?

A girls' shirt from JC Penney has moms and dads debating appropriate clothing messages.

My Twitter feed lit up like a firecracker Wednesday, as moms across Bucks and Montgomery county expressed outrage over a shirt for sale at jcpenney.com

The writing on the front sums up the firestorm: "I'm too pretty to do homework, so my brother has to do it for me."

I wasn't the only one incredulous. Tweets to @jcpenney over the shirt showed women - and hopefully plenty of men - did not think the "cute" shirt was funny.

Lauren Todd, of Brooklyn, NY, started a petition asking the store to stop selling the shirt.

By the end of Wednesday, they had agreed.

"We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale.  Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize for any concern we may have caused and assure you that we are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that [our customers] have come to expect."

It got me thinking: would you ever let your daughter wear that shirt? Would you buy it for her, or any other girl?

And what 12 people hit the Facebook "like" button?
