John C. Gourley, 87, Known as 'Mr. Volunteer'

John was married to his wife, Willetta King, for 62 years.

John C. Gourley of Pine Run Community, Doylestown passed away at his residence with family by his side, on Thursday, Nov. 14 at the age of 87.

He was born in Glenside, he was the son of the late W. Clyde and Dorothy Darrah Gourley.

John was married to his partner and wife, Willetta King a.k.a Willie or Willa for 62 years. They led a full life and were fortunate to travel worldwide together.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by, his son: Jack (Joanne), and daughters: Amy Landis (Dave) and daughter Nancy Bellmeyer. John had eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Roberta Beck and Jane Blilie, his brother: Walter Gourley and his grandson, Justin D. Landis.

John graduated from Abington High School and enlisted in the Army during World War II. He fought with the 28th Infantry Battalion through France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia serving in the 2nd infantry division. He was awarded several metals and a purple heart.

After returning from the service he attended Temple University and worked for various insurance companies, George K. Garrett Company, National Lockwasher Company and King Engineering. In 1968 he started his own Manufacturer Rep business, John Gourley Associates, which is now run by his son, Jack, and his grandson, Mike. John was always proud of the three generations continuing the business.

He was referred to as "Mr. Volunteer.” He was a little league coach, Sunday School Teacher, Boy Scout Advisor and Big Brother. He was also a founder of the Indian Princesses for the Hatboro YMCA. He drove for 16 years for Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Doylestown Hospital two days a week, where he contributed over 6,000 hours of volunteer service. Upon moving to Pine Run Community he became involved in many volunteer duties there

John was a member of the Chalfont Lions Club, having served in many offices for the Club, including Past President. He was also a member of Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church, Chalfont.

He always owned a motor boat, did a lot of water skiing and taught many others how to ski. He enjoyed playing golf and watching most other sports.

A memorial service was held Monday, Nov. 18 at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home. Interment was private.
