Fonthill Old-Fashioned Fourth of July is a Red, White and Blue Blast

The Old Fashioned 4th of July had bikes, kids, food and fun for all!

There was plenty of red, white and blue at Fonthill for the Fourth, as there is every Fourth of July for at least the past 18 years. According to the event's director, Ed Reidell, over 1,500 people attended the day-long celebration this year that showcases vintage activities.

The decorated bike parade is the kick-off for the day. Over 200 entrants rode bikes, scooters, wagons and other wheeled whirligigs around the grounds. Prizes were awarded to many entrants, for categories like Most Historic, Most Creative, and Noisiest. The tradition brings kids and parents back, year after year, looking to be the most creative and patriotic displays.

After the awards, there were games of skill, like wheelbarrow races, sack races, and the obstacle course. Feats of strength were witnessed in the tug-of-war. It wouldn't be the Fourth of July without a watermelon eating contest, and kids attempted to put out an imaginary fire with the bucket brigade competition.

Food is plentiful, and the cake walk was a way for everyone to win some tasty dessert. Strolling singers from the Bucks County Gentlemen regaled all with music of old in four-part harmony. The Merri Makers and Galina Brass gave spirited performances of patriotic tunes. And storyteller Robin Moore told tall tales in a teepee.

Tours were available of the Fonthill Castle as Henry Mercer himself roamed the grounds greeting visitors to his home.
