Sitting as a family allows for information sharing amongst parents and children, husbands and wives. Having effective communication and sitting down together to share your day’s events is an incredibly simple strategy that creates bonding and better relationships amongst family members. So much information can be exchanged during such a small amount of time, when that time is solely used for that purpose.

I know with traveling parents, business owners that work crazy hours and grueling after school schedules it seems almost impossible. I encourage you to take just 10 minutes and look over your schedule. Where is there a time where you can all be together? Then put that day on the calendar, even if only 1 day a week.

You can even incorporate family meals while dining out at your local favorite restaurant. This is a great time to connect with one another and you don’t even have to do the cooking! We still have small children in our family so when we eat out, we bring along cards, Uno and activity pages. We try to go back to old fashioned games and not computer based ones. During that 1 hour meal, we really connect as a family.

In the long run, spending time and putting time into your relationships now helps protect against problems later.

Now go look at that calendar and with pen, not pencil, write in “family dinner”!
