What's Right with Doylestown

A look at five things that make Doylestown a great place to live, dine, and shop.

Doylestown has a lot to offer both residents and visitors. There's much to do and lots of fun to be had. So what are some of the highlights? Here's a look at five of them:

  1. Restaurant Variety - There's a wide range of choices to eat. From essential staples like pizza, BBQ, burgers, or great tavern food, to lots of foreign cuisines, there's something for everyone. Italian, Thai, Japanese, French, Central American and more can be walked to from the center of the business district. Both casual and fancier dining are well-represented, and many have outdoor seating. When complemented with no fewer than three coffeehouses in town—each with their own vibe—Doylestown's a great place to spend a night.
  2. Pedestrian-Friendly - Walk around the borough and one thing is clear; there's scarcely a street without sidewalks on at least one side of the street, even along lesser-used residential roads. Whether you're a runner, brisk walker, or casual dog-walker, you almost never need to venture onto the blacktop, and the 25 MPH speed limit helps keep you safe when you do. Tack on shutting down a block of Hamilton for the Saturday farmers' market and we've really got a winning area for foot traffic.
  3. Parking's Reasonably Cheap - Some might grumble at getting 'just' an hour for 25¢. But compared to New Hope, it's a bargain, where that same quarter only gets you 20 minutes. And their meters take money longer (10:00 – 9:00 vs. our 9:00 – 5:00) and don't give Sundays off, either.
  4. First Friday - An event that helps our local merchants thrive can only benefit us as a community. The monthly Friday evening event where we can Love Our Local later into the night and maybe compliment that with dining at one of our great restaurants brings a change of pace to the center of town, letting people slow down and enjoy the night a bit, knowing that time is on their side.
  5. Great Merchants - Doylestown is blessed to have friendly store owners and an array of offerings that make it nearly possible to get every common service or product one could need within two blocks of the State & Main intersection. They know your name, they know your dog's name, and make shopping like visiting a family member (or a family member you actually like, anyway). And through their work with the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance, they help bring the town niceties like hanging flower baskets, Christmas lights, and the Arts Festival that all make the town a great place to be.

There's my list. What do you think makes Doylestown so special?
