Historic Statue Mysteriously Returns to Aldie Mansion After 25 Years

Thanks to a mysterious benefactor, the fifth and final gargoyle has made its way home to the Aldie Mansion.

Heritage Conservancy staff members were treated to an eerie surprise when they arrived to work at the Aldie Mansion on the morning of May 7.

A 3 feet by 2 feet concrete gargoyle, original to the mansion that had been missing for over 25 years, was back. Attached to the concrete sculpture was an elusive handwritten note that read, “I belong on the roof...”

Heritage Conservancy, a nationally accredited community-based land conservation organization that works to preserve and protect natural and historic heritage, has maintained historic Aldie Mansion as its headquarters since 1987.

"Thanks to a mysterious benefactor, the fifth and final gargoyle has made its way home. Although the gargoyle statue could certainly be considered the biggest enigma of the lot, this is not the first time that a piece of artwork has been returned to the Conservancy," the organization wrote in an announcement on Patch.
