Medieval Festival Returns to Glencairn [Photos]

Middle Ages came to life Sunday at Glencairn Museum's annual festival.

Swords and chain mail, flowing costumes and ink-stained leather brought the Middle Ages to life Sunday at Glencairn Museum.

The museum's annual Medieval Festival drew hundreds of people to the castle in Bryn Athyn, which houses a museum collection dedicated to the history of religion.

Volunteers dressed in period costumes directed visitors around the castle and demonstrated the medieval arts of stained-glass painting and manuscript illumination. Others presented demonstrations of medieval musical instruments and weaponry as well as the workings of a Gutenberg-style printing press.

Built between 1928 and 1939, Glencairn was the home of Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn. The couple left the home to the Academy of the New Church after Mildred died in 1980.
