Observe Memorial Day in Doylestown

Monday, May 27 is the time to honor our patriots and welcome the summer.

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.

The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.

So, what is the best way to honor the holiday?

The parade begins at Central Bucks High School West and goes along W. Court Street to Clinton Street. From there it goes onto State Street to Main Street, turns onto E. Court Street and finishes at the Doylestown Cemetery.

There will be no parking on both sides of W. Court Street between Lafayette Street and Clinton Street from 7 a.m. to about 2 p.m.

Before and after the parade, there are plenty of other ways to observe the holiday and celebrate with neighbors. Here are a few options; if you know of others, please add them to the comments section of this article.

  • Salem United Church of Christ is holding a Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m.
  • The Bucks County Civil War Museum and Library will hold its annual Open House from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Remember, should you decide to hang a flag on Memorial Day, it should never touch the ground and it should be flown at half-mast until noon.
