Broad Street Corridor Nearly Done

Lights at the corner of Broad and Union are the final touches to $1 million worth of upgrades.

Drivers along Doylestown's Broad Street soon will notice the finishing touches of $1 million in upgrades.

The latest changes along the street include flashing traffic lights at the intersection of Broad and Union.

The lights are the latest move to upgrade the street from what was essentially a sidestreet to the gateway to the Bucks County Courthouse and its new parking garage.

"That one pole is the last part of it to be done," said Jerry Anderson, head of general services for Bucks County government. "It could be converted to a full signal if the borough desires. All the improvements along there are tied into the borough’s tied–in traffic loop."

The $1 million invested in the traffic lights, cut outs and other streetscape improvements came from Bucks County government, but the borough of Doylestown has approved of all of them.

"We're pleased with how the whole project has turned out," said John Davis, Doylestown's borough manager.

The Bucks County Commissioners recently approved legal agreements with landowners at the corners of Broad and Union. The agreements outline easements to grant the county access to finish erecting traffic light poles at the intersection.

Once the final pole is up at Broad and Union, the lights will be switched on. They'll remain in flashing mode for the near future, Davis said, but could eventually be modified into full stoplights, if needed.

The other county-funded improvements include traffic lights at the four corners at the Route 611 bypass and at Broad and Doyle.
