Almshouse Road To Close for Construction

The detour should last a couple of weeks.

If you use the northern section of Almshouse Road much, you'll have to find a new way to get where you need to go for awhile.

The stretch of Almshouse Road between Upper State Road and Lower State Road in Doylestown Township will be closed and detoured for three weeks, the state Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The road will be closed starting Monday, March 28, and is expected to reopen by April 18, the department said.

Drivers will be detoured over nearby roads, including Bristol Road, Route 202, and Lower State Road. Residents still will be allowed to use the road to get to their neighborhoods.

The closure is needed to allow construction on part of the long-awaited 8.6 mile Route 202 Bypass, which has been in the works for decades.

"Construction crews will reconstruct and lower a 500-foot long section of Almshouse Road by a foot to improve sight distance and provide the necessary clearance in the area where the Route 202 Parkway will cross over the road," PennDOT spokesman Eugene Blaum said in a statement.

The work on Almshouse Road is part of PennDOT’s $42.2 million contract to build the northern section of the Route 202 Parkway between Pickertown Road in Warrington Township and Route 611 in Doylestown Township, Blaum said.

The general contractor is James D. Morrissey, Inc. of Philadelphia.

PennDOT has two contracts under construction to build the bypass, which will stretch from Route 63 in Montgomery Township to Route 611 near Doylestown.

The parkway is scheduled to open in mid-2012. For more information, check out the website PennDOT has put together for the project.
