5. On this day in 1944, the Nazis captured Anne Frank and her family from the secret room in which they had been hiding in Holland since 1942. Shipped first to Auschwitz, Anne died just eight months later of typhus at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. Her diary, found after World War II ended was given to her father, Otto - the family's lone survivor of the Holocaust - and published in 1947. It became an instant best-seller.
