On this day in 1993, British scientists announce that they have  identified the remains of Russia's last royal family, the Romanovs. They used mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down through the female side of the family, to identify bones excavated from a mass grave near Yekaterinburg in 1991 as czar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra and three of their daughters. One daughter and son Alexei were not amongst the remains, fueling speculation that they had survived the execution.
