5. On this day in history, in 1989, the Chinese government sent tanks in to take Tiananman Square back from the throngs of protestors who had occupied it for seven weeks. The protests in favor of democratic reforms had been started by students from more than 40 universities; the young people were joined by workers, intellectuals and more until more than one million people occupied the square in the center of Beijing. On June 3, army troops and tanks moved in, and by June 4, hundreds had been killed and thousands arrested, many of whom were later executed.
