State Champion Doylestown Tigers Announce Season Award Winners

Doylestown Tigers American Legion Baseball team celebrated their first State Title and hand out their 2012 season awards.

On November 24, 2012, the Doylestown Tigers American Legion Baseball team convened to celebrate their first State Title and hand out their season awards. The team won its first State Title over the summer in a thrilling run.

The team and coaches voted in the following players for their awards.

Mel Wright Award - Jon Mullin- The Mel Wright Award is presented to a member of each team in the Bux-Mont American Legion League by Pennridge manager Rocky Wright, It is in honor of his father Mel. This award goes to the player on each team that exhibits the drive, determination and commitment to be a Champion on and off the field. These presentations were made during the Bux-Mont Champions presentation over the summer.

Most Improved - Jon Mullin- Jon was a consummate leader on team of veterans and during long stretches of the season was the driving force that made the go. He finished in the top of all offensive categories and carried the bulk of the catching load for the squad.

Most Valuable Pitcher - Jason Goldeberg- Jason was the team’s leading pitcher for season. He was undefeated with 11 wins. With an ERA under 2 runs per game he was the rock the staff was built upon. Jason was also selected as outstanding pitcher in the State Tournament.

Most Valuable Player - Joe Monaghan- Joe was the team’s inspirational leader, providing some of the most exciting contributions at critical times. His ability to inspire his teammates by sheer will to win made him the most valuable player. As a leader in many offensive categories and 9 wins with no losses on the mound, his contributions were outstanding. His Champions Heart bleeds over to his teammates and inspired their performances as well.

Marilyn Wright Scholarship Award - Andrew Check-  The Top Award for Doylestown American Legion is a scholarship for the player who exhibits the true meaning of what Doylestown Legion American Legion stands for through the eyes of Marilyn Wright. Marilyn was the wife of Mel Wright the long time Doylestown Manager, Bux-Mont League President and Pa Legion Hall of Fame Member and mother of Pennridge Legion Manager Rocky Wright Marilyn’s vision of her player of the year was a young man who was first to the field, last to leave, would always put the teams needs above his own personal desires. A young man who, on the field and off, would carry himself with the true ideals of the American Legion Code. A young man whose dedication, drive and desire were above and beyond the call of duty.

This year’s winner is Andrew Check. Andrew was a driving force on the field and relentless and tireless supporter of the Legion Team and Family. Andrew received a college scholarship award of $1,000.00, whose funding was from Albert R, Atkinson Post 210 and local business sponsors.

First Team:

Catcher- Jon Mullin

Centerfielder- Ryan Clow

Second Team:

Pitcher- Jason Goldberg

First Baseman- Clay Sebesky

Shortstop- Dylan Glassmire

Third Team:

Pitcher- Joe Monaghan

Utility Player- Andrew Check
