October is Bully Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and the Y is once again recognizing this important subject by incorporating bullying awareness into all levels of their youth development programs.

Parent/child classes will watch an age-appropriate puppet show about being a good friend. Sports classes will talk about how to be a good friend and the how to respect each other. Skate class will speak about bullying during a session in mid-October and the Y ambassador program will launch this month and emphasize the importance of treating fellow skatepark participants with respect.

At the Y Preschool, students will discuss using kind, caring words. Older preschoolers will talk about bullying and the meaning of “being bullied.” Preschool parents were given literature on bully prevention with suggestions of books to read and ways to talk about bullying with their children.

Activities for older youth include Y Teen Leaders discussing bullying and meeting with representatives from the Peace Center, a Langhorne organization working for community peace and social justice, toward the end of the month.

A video overview of all youth development bully prevention activities will be created and distributed on the Y’s social media outlets as a follow up to their popular teen bully prevention video from last year.
