Herb's Hobbies Closing After 40 Years

The independently owned craft store in Doylestown is closing.

Herb's Hobbies and Crafts is closing.

The independently owned craft store on Doylestown's West State Street sent a postcard to customers with the news.

"After serving your craft and hobby needs for 40 years, we are retiring," the card reads, in part.

The retirement sale began Wednesday, Dec. 26. All items in the store are at least 20 percent off. And once an item is gone, "it's gone forever," according to the postcard.

Founded in 1972, Herb's has been a mainstay in Doylestown for crafts and hobbies of all types, from model trains to knitting to scrapbooking.

Herbs was the best place to go for your pinewood derby supplies and madels. We will surely miss them.

Congratulations on your retirement and thank you for serving our community so enthusiastically. Herbs has been a Doylestown institution and landmark, and will be missed by all.

This is indeed sad news,I guess the big chains have helped to run them into closing with their poor grade of items. herbs has always been the best!

Herbs is a Doylestown institution. When my boys were young we purchased toy model airplanes and battleships along with the various paints. It was a great place for the kids to find their school project supplies as well as creative ideas for birthday or Christmas gifts. Thank you for making great memories for the kids. Mike Carty

I remember going to Herb's as a kid, and being tickled to take my own kids to Herbs for their school projects and other craft supplies. Many great creations were born there. Thank you for being there for at least two generations of families in Doylestown. We will miss you!

wow....so sad to hear but wish them all the best in their retirement! I grew up on North Clinton Street and we used to go to Herb's when they were in the yellow building just up the street. I used to buy dollhouse furniture and embroidery supplies from them.....my brothers and dad used to get their model airplanes and trains from there....so many wonderful memories.....

This is sad news, I have bought birthday party presents, Christmas gifts, crafts, toys, a doll house, etc since I moved to Doylestown over 15 years ago this year. It will be a big loss to our town.

Hopefully we can get another Craft/Hobby store in. Perhaps Hobby Lobby is interested?

They stopped serving the community when they posted the so in-your-face signs about not parking in their sacred parking lot even after hours. Not very civically minded. Friends of ours were treated quite rudely there when they must have asked one too many questions while shopping. I think it's time....

Thank you for all the years of being a part of the local flavor of Doylestown and for also being a part of our personal family history. You provided my little brother a pastime when he came with our parents to visit his big sister. At first we would walk him up the street to shop at Herb's, and then it became a really exciting visit when he could walk up to Herb's on his own to buy a model airplane! Well that little brother is now a pilot on a major airline flying International flights!! Midd's big sister from the big twin house on West Street :-) ...and also thanks for many years of "we'll just stop by Herb's" to get the whatever was needed for many many projects and crafts throughout my childrens childhood!

Very sad to see yet another Doylestown institution go. I've been going there since 1982 and it was the go-to place for my daughter through Kutz, Lenape and West. Thanks for being there all these years. So sorry to see you go. Now we'll have to schlep a distance and go to a shudder, "chain" store. Bummer.

My grandfather use to buy trains there and other things for his train displays.Gave me some great memories.God bless.

Oh well that is the second hobby shop to close. Penn valley in Lansdale is also closing this moth I think. Everything is 40% off. They are only open on sat now. Does anyone know when herbs is locking the door forever? For this area that is it. No more hobby shops around. Unless you go to q_mart in quakertown.

I grew up in Chalfont and Doylestown, and now live in Japan, but I think of Herbs when I think of my hometown. It's always been there! It's too bad that no one else can take over the store after the owners retire. It will certainly be missed.

I just read last night that Herbs is closed and i'm horrified! I always made it a point to visit before Christmas to get in the spirit, buy some thngs and get away from all the commercialized, retail garbage. I even took friends there toshow them what an old time hobby store looked like! When I was in there in early December, I noticed the shelves were pretty bare and I asked Herb in a roundabout way what was going on but he didnt mention they were closing. I'm sounding like an old crumdgin at 40 but I'll always remember going there with my dad to buy a model kit and then go to Willow Grove to watch planes or get a book that you couldnt find anywhere else. The young whipper snappers of today dont know what they are missing...and they need to get off my lawn with their darn rock music! :)
