Doylestown Genuardi's to Become a Weis

So much for Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.

The Doylestown Genuardi's store is changing, but not to either of the high-end choices locals wanted.

The grocery store in the Mercer Square shopping center on North Main Street is becoming a Weis.

Weis Markets Inc. announced Monday that it will buy three of the Genuardi's stores in the Philadelphia area, including , Norristown and Conshohocken.

For now, the stores will continue to operate as Genuardi's while the sale is completed, the company said.

"We're extremely pleased to be adding these stores to our store base," said Weis Markets' President and CEO David J. Hepfinger in a statement.  "We look forward to serving these communities as the lead local merchant as we have in 33 counties throughout Central, Eastern and Northeastern Pennsylvania.  We will also be reaching out to the associates of these stores to discuss employment with our company."

Weis Markets owns 161 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.

When news first broke that the Genuardi's chain was up for sale, we asked what kind of store you would like to see come to Doylestown.

Hundreds of ; you wanted a high-end market like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.
