Performers to Explore Tourette's Through Song, Dance

A collaborative of dancers and performers, many with Tourette's Syndrome, will perform in Doylestown on May 30 at the Michener Art Museum.

A collaborative of dancers and performers, many with Tourette's Syndrome, will come to Doylestown later this month for a special program being held in conjunction with Michener Art Museum’s latest exhibit.

Band Of Artists will perform "Tourette's: A Dancing Disorder” at the Michener Art Museum on May 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The performance is being held conjunction with Infinite Mirror: Images of American Identity, which is on view at the Michener through July 7.

Band of Artists is described as being “at the forefront of a movement” to create awareness about neurological disorders while giving a “powerful voice that inspires appreciation and admiration for people who are different.”

Many, not all, of Band of Artists performers have Tourette's. The group's director Sutie Madison, has Tourette's and founded Band of Artists in 2011.

The group combines art with scientific research, dance and lecture, to “challenge and inspire people to take another look at their definitions of disability,” according to their website.

Neurologist James Cook, M.D., from Abington Memorial Hospital will be present on May 30 to discuss the scientific definition and components of Tourette's Syndrome.

The Infinite Mirror exhibition examines “the struggle for acceptance and what it truly means to be an American in the 21st century,” explained Michener Communications Manager Eileen Dube.

The exhibition features more than 60 multi-media works including: paintings, works on paper, photographs and video by culturally-diverse artists from across the United States, according to information provided by the museum.

Tickets to "Tourette's: A Dancing Disorder" are included with museum admission, however seating is limited. Call 215-340-9800 to reserve tickets.
