Michener Recognizes Work of Museum Volunteers

The museum relies on volunteers in multiple areas, including office work, maintaining the gift shop and operating the front desk.

The James A. Michener Art Museum honored four volunteers at its 19th annual Volunteer Recognition Award Ceremony on April 23.  The event celebrates the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who continually support the Michener Art Museum’s mission of educating the community to develop a lifelong involvement in the arts.

Lisa Tremper Hanover, Director & CEO, spoke about her enjoyment of her own volunteer experiences and what volunteers mean to the Michener Art Museum.

“We are very fortunate to have a strong and dedicated group of volunteers who have given the museum over 15,000 hours during 2012, an increase of over 3,500 hours since 2011," she said. "Based on the latest national value, this translates into over $354,000. Aside from the monetary contribution, Michener volunteers give much more through their enthusiastic love of the region’s art.”

The Michener depends on a strong volunteer partnership and volunteer support plays a big part in all areas of the museum.  The administrative offices need volunteers with office skills and computer skills; the galleries demand responsible, community oriented people; the Museum Shop needs friendly, customer oriented volunteers to assist customers; the Front Desk welcomes enthusiastic volunteers to answer the telephone and help with shop sales.

Children’s art workshops, both on-site and off-site, need volunteers who enjoy nurturing the creative process; knowledgeable docents interpret exhibitions to visitors; the education department seeks individuals who like to share their enthusiasm for art with others; and the expanding program offerings need special events hosts to ensure that visitors’ experiences at the Michener are enjoyable.
