Michener Extends Uffizi Exhibit

Museum officials said Wednesday the Italian exhibit has drawn record crowds.

Visitors will have an extra few days this summer to visit the Michener Museum's exhibit of Italian Renaissance art.

The James A. Michener Art Musuem has extended the last date for the exhibit to Sunday, August 12, officials announced Wednesday.

"Visitors have been coming in record numbers to see these tapestries and old master paintings that have never been in this region before," museum director and CEO Bruce Katsiff said in a statement. "We are delighted that the Uffizi has permitted us to have Offering of the Angels: Treasures from the Uffizi Gallery an additional weekend, to allow even more visitors to view these treasures that reflect the high points of artistic achievement of Western civilization."

Offering of the Angels: Treasures from the Uffizi Gallery and was to run through Friday, August 10. The extension will allow one last chance for weekend visitors to see the show.

The show has been so popular that museum staffers such as publicist Ilene Dube have been pressed into service as on-call guards to patrol the exhibit, which is being presented with extra security to protect the priceless works of art.

So far, 21,392 people have visited the exhibit, Dube said Wednesday, helping to set an attendance record for the month of May.

Curated by by Uffizi director Antonio Natali, the exhibit includes 45 paintings and tapestries that take the viewer on a tour de force of Biblical images.

Admission is $15 for adults; $13 senior citizens; $11 college students; and $7.50 ages 6-18. To buy tickets or for more information, visit the museum's website.
