"Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" - the Heyday of our Artistic Celebrities (1920-1950)

This Exhibit features the literary and theatrical celebrities who came to Doylestown some 80 or more years ago when Bucks County's population was less than a fourth the size it is today and Doylestown was its sleepy County Seat where the sidewalks were "rolled up" before 9 p.m.

Most of these artistic individuals were or were to become nationally famous - Hammerstein, Pearl Buck, S.J.Perelman, Dorothy Parker, George Kaufman and Moss Hart. James Michener had been born and grew up here.

Incredible achievers, who received a large number of Pulitzers and Oscars, some of them were members of Manhattan's Cafe Society and ringleaders of The Algonquin Round Table who frequented the Algonquin Hotel on 44th Street and were a raucous, fun-loving group. Some did not fit in well with their countrified neighbors and eventually, after World War II, left the area.

Michener went on to write 48 books and explore far-distant places, often with his great friend Herman Silverman, who continues to live near Doylestown.
