"P-U" Carved Out a Win

Artists took home top honors during this year's Pumpkinfest in Doylestown.

Bugs, sea monsters and mice decorated the winning carved creations at Bucks County Pumpkinfest 2011, which attracted about 20,000 people this year, organizers said.

Run in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, a national drug and alcohol abuse prevention campaign, Bucks County Pumpkinfest is the largest two-day non-alcoholic fundraiser in the state, staffed by more than 450 volunteers.

One of the main attractions is the carving contest, in which artists impose their vision onto the squash and compete for top prize.

  • First Place: “P-U”, by Chanin and Bill Milnazik
  • Second Place: “Deep Sea Monster” by Michelle Yeager and Tim Merz
  • Third Place: “Bad Seed” by Dan and Michelle Clark
  • Malloy Award and People’s Choice Award both went to: “Day of the Dead” by Tyree Dworak and Bill Goble.
  • Honorable mentions: "The Raven" by Doug May; “Metropolis” by The Kobasz Family and “Monster Truck” by Chuck and Janet Greenstreet.

The Pumpkinfest Pumpkin Gallery was juried by area artists Alan Fetterman, Ray Mathis, and Steven Snyder.

Fetterman, who also served as the event coordinator, thanked the community for its support.

"The Bucks County Pumpkinfest is not only a wonderful family tradition, but it also educates and informs the community about prevention of drug dependence and addictions with a positive bent," Fetterman said, in a statement, Monday. "I think we are lucky to have such a spectacular legacy in our community and The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania truly deserves kudos for their long term commitment to better health and a brighter community."

Pumpkinfest is presented by The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, Inc. and will mark its 20th year anniversary next year. This year’s presenting sponsor was Bottom Dollar Food.
