William H. "Bill" Stevens III served two stints on borough council, the first from 1989 to 2001. In early 2010, he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board created when council member John Buckman died. He served until the end of 2011.

He was the longtime chair of borough council's finance committee and also was a member of the borough's youth advisory board.

Those who served with him expressed their condolences after his death, calling him a "class act."

Council member Joan Doyle said Stevens always made thoughtful decisions for the community.

"It was a privilege to serve with him and his passing is far too premature," she said. "I came to respect him for his wise advice and viewpoints and always enjoyed his stories."

Stevens lived in Doylestown Borough for 33 years, and was involved with several organizations, including American Legion Post 210, Guardians of the National Cemetery, Bux-Mont American Legion Baseball League and Doylestown O35 Softball League.

His passion for baseball is just one of the many ways in which Stevens will be remembered.

"As an ambassador for American Legion Baseball, Bill Stevens was as steady and poised a leader as there is in local baseball," said Kevin Manero. "He commanded the Bux-Mont American Legion Baseball League with consistency, dedication and professionalism.

"All players and coaches have lost a great baseball man to whom they owe a large debt of gratitude, but these players and coaches, perhaps without even knowing it at the time, have also gained so much from the time and effort he dedicated for all of us."
