Poll Finds Majority of Pennsylvanians Support Same-Sex Marriage

A recent poll by Quinnipiac University has found that a majority of Pennsylvanians support same-sex marriage.

Fifty-seven percent of those polled would support a law allowing same-sex couples to marry, while 37 percent were opposed to such a law.

The poll results broke down predictably along party lines; 74 percent of Democrats were in favor of such a law, while a majority of Republicans -- 59 percent -- were opposed.

Fifty-three percent of men polled were in favor of a law permitting same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania, with 41 percent opposed. Sixty percent of women were in favor, with 34 percent opposed.

Younger voters were more likely to be in favor of such a law. The poll found 80 percent of voters ages 18 to 29 were in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage, with 15 percent opposed. Opinions among older voters were more divided, with 44 percent of those over 65 in favor and 48 percent opposed.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,405 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points from Feb. 19 to 24, calling both land lines and cell phones.
