Escape that Winter Coat at the YMCA 5K Saturday

Saturday kicks off the Bucks5kSeries with the Central Bucks Family YMCA 5K for an evening run in Doylestown Borough.

The good news is that the first 5K in the Bucks5kSeries is on Saturday; the better news is that you can also sleep late because the Central Bucks Family YMCA 5K moved from an early morning start to 5:15 p.m.

Bucks5kSeries is a non-profit organization, and the race is part of a fundraiser; in fact, after the race, you can donate the running shoes right off your feet!

For the Y, the 5K kicks off for it’s Community Support Campaign.

"Last year, the Y raised a total of $477,000, and our goal for this year $530,000," said Marie Axler, communications specialist for the Y.

That campaign lasts about 12 weeks, she said, and the proceeds fund programs like the THRIVE Cancer wellness program, which provides membership and fitness/wellness programs to community members surviving cancer; 7th grade memberships and programs—free to all local 7th graders—financial assistance to community members who are struggling and more.

Back to the race.

The entry fee is $30; registration begins a 3 p.m. at the Central Bucks Family YMCA, and the course is closed to traffic in Doylestown Borough. (Park on Memorial Drive at the parking lot next to the War Memorial Stadium.)

Child Care is available and during the race and families are encouraged to participate in the 1 mile fun run or 5k together.

“It will be a great community day,” Axler said.

Re-Use Your Shoes will be collecting gently used running shoes during the races. The company cleans them up and donates them to shelters and organizations in need. Shoes that can’t be reused are shredded and turned into material for playgrounds.

Other sponsors of the event include First Savings Bank, Eastburn and Grey, Fred Beans and the Keenan Motor Group. ACME Doylestown is also supporting the after race pasta party.
