Youth work with Olympic swimmers at recent Y event

Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen and Kate Ziegler jumped in the Y’s 25-meter pool on Friday to teach local youth stroke technique. The 4-hour clinic, designed to provide group instruction on all four strokes, served to inspire local swimmers to always do their best and reach their goals.

“I got to wear the gold medal. It’s was A+,” said Tommy Tubinas, 10, of Pipersville. “And I learned that the fastest swimmers in the world are the fastest kickers.”

Participants in the program met the athletes one-on-one and posed for photos wearing the gold medal Hansen won at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games 4X100-meter medley relay event with Michael Phelps, Matt Grevers and Nathan Adrian.

“Tommy asked Brendan (Hansen) if he could send him emails…and he gave Tommy his address. A great swimmer…and a great guy,” said Charlene, Tommy’s mother, who observed the event from the pool deck.

Both Ziegler and Hansen were members of the 2012 United States Olympic Team. During the clinic, youth received swim instructions in the pool and listened to stories from the Olympic Games on deck.
