Bucks County libraries' 2014 summer reading program funded by Fred Beans grant

A $50,000 grant from the Fred Beans Automotive Group will help fund the Bucks County Library Systems’ Summer Reading Program, “Fizz Boom Read,” in 2014.

The donation was made through the state’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. Fred Beans has also pledged a second $50,000 grant to fund another year of summer programs in 2015.

“The library would not be able to move ahead with this key program without the strong support of the Beans organization,” states Martina Kominiarek, executive director. “Research shows that children will lose gains they’ve made in reading during the school year if they don’t read in the summer. And it can take up to four months to return to the same reading level achieved by the end of the previous school year.”

“The library summer program is fundamental in contributing to children’s literacy skills,” says Roberta Yakovich, District Youth Services Consultant.

The last two years’ summer reading programs were also funded by $50,000 EITC grants from Fred Beans. More than 44,000 youth and adults attended the Bucks County Library system’s summer programs in 2013 at seven county branches and 11 township and community libraries.
