More About James-Lorah Memorial Home
The James-Lorah Memorial Home is a historical site that is open for public tours.
The former dwelling at 132 N. Main St. is the headquarters of the Village Improvement Association, the women's organization founded in 1895 for the betterment of Doylestown.
Part of the property dates to 1806, when Zerick Titus built a harness and saddler's shop about where the one-story wing to the right of the main house now stands.
The home as it looks today was built around 1844 by Judge Henry Chapman, grandfather of Henry Mercer.
A later owner, Sarah James, bequeated the home to the V.I.A. after her death in 1954.
The house features Greek revival, Federal and Italianate style architecture.
Its auditorium is used frequently for public and community events.
