Why I'm Breaking Up With Wegmans

Today, I publicly announce that I am breaking up with Wegmans. And Yankee Candle. I am crushed – as I have been such a vocal supporter – tweeting, talking, Foursquareing, and Facebooking, about their fabulous products.

Wegmans salad bar is fantastic (though they keep changing the layout of the store around which is frustrating – and there is one really cranky guy at the deli and if he is working, I will bypass the deli as I can’t stand the dirty look he gives me if I ask for my ham to be sliced very thin).

And Yankee Candle – well, I love that they continually invent fantastic scents.

But, sadly, I can’t give my money to companies who support the demise of health care... that unemployment of minorities hovers in the 14% range and continues to climb – that energy prices sky rocket even as tax payers monies continue to be wasted on failed crony driven programs (23 so far - including Solyndra, A123 Systems, Beacon Power) while thousands remain deprived of a job in the oil/coal industry due to over-regulation.

I am breaking up with companies (both small and large – both local and corporate) that villainize  job creators and seek to punish success. How ironic that the guy at the Doylestown Farmers market selling bread has an Obama sticker on his car – and yet charges 7.00 for a loaf of bread. So, the message I take away; the bread guy wants to make money and is willing to charge hefty for it yet, he is anti-capitalism and seeks to punish job creators?

The re-election of President Obama sends a message of support for high unemployment, poor health care, an intrusive government, and that character and hard work are no longer important – living on the government plantation is an acceptable way of life.

There is one piece of advice that has resonated with me after reading all the follow up articles after the election - that is "Defense is static. Offense is dynamic."

I’m on the offense now. And when I decided not do business with freedom destroyers, I discovered I am not the only one. I received emails from friends who fired cleaning ladies, nannies, contractors, a guitar teacher, and a physical therapist. When I sent out a tweet about our No Liberal Businesses – Starve The Liberal Beast – I received many tweets from across the country –  freedom ninjas have already made the movement to support freedom,  to empower those who work hard to exceed and raise the level of safety and security for themselves and their families. A few examples:

@liberalSMASH Nov 10, 1:41pm via Echofon:  we started that in VA too. dropped our Chiropractor-Fink Family Wellness, won't use our DT Leesburg Photog, #noLIBbiz!

@karaschardt Nov 10, 8:30pm via Twitter for iPad: Asked a contractor I interviewed today who he voted for: had he said Obama, he was out of consideration

@Discoveringme40 10:17am via Twitter for iPad: let go my first BO supporter Nothing big, house maintenance. But it felt good.

@Discoveringme40 10:32am via Twitter for iPad:  #StarveLiberalBeasts No more Starbucks for this family 261 work days x $4 = $1,044 I'll put in fam pocket vs democrats

@ThorsHammer651 10:17am via Echofon:  I'm starving the beast!! Keeping it all local. No chain stores. One way to start the revolution!

As a person who has lived from paycheck to paycheck– I’ve had to work for bosses that treat employees horribly because I’ve depended on them for a check.  As my bank account improved, so to did my position in life – I no longer had to work for horrible bosses. If I was treated poorly, I could quit. I learned quickly that the more money you have, the more control you have over your life. If you are dependent on the government – you give them all the power and they take away your voice and independence. "Don't bite the hand that feeds you." - Bottom line, the more prosperous the people, the more freedom, the safer the community (look at Chicago, Philly, Detroit, Baltimore – highest rates of poverty, highest rates of violence – run for years by Democrats).

What better way to play offense - than to exchange our hard earned money with the people who support personal freedom and the Constitution! I’ll be keeping and updating a list of anti freedom and pro freedom businesses on my website.

www.LauraFreedTV.com

We’ll defeat the propagandizing, ignorant, malicious, pandering, selfish freedom destroyers – and starving the beast is one of our strategies. It’s not just happening here – it’s a movement that is quietly happening across America. People are tweeting, there are Facebook pages, and emails are being exchanged rapidly.

Starve The Liberal Beast - Feed the people who strive to empower!

Freedom Will Prevail!

Thanks for this information, I shop at Wegman's every week as well as lunch take outs every few days from the Asian bar-However, I will not do this anymore, It is my choice where I spend my hard earned dollars and it will not be with a company that supports an administration / party that each day attacks my freedoms. Giant market is only a mile or so away and I will be a frequent customer there!!

There is no freedom in hatred:
"We know that they hate us from the depths of their souls. We take pleasure in their hatred. There is nothing that they would not do to us if they had the power. We cannot therefore give them even the slightest bit of power. More than that, it is our duty to tell the world of their nature and their depravity."

I have never been a fan of boycotts, but when I have a choice I will certainly make an effort to support more conservative businesses. It seems the message of diversity and tolerance only applies if you have adopted a far left agenda and curse the ground that any conservative has ever walked upon.

We can only hope that the cites with 95% far left voting records will wake up and realize that they have become useful idiots and that the little scraps of entitlement handouts the administration tosses them is not worth throwing their freedom away. They have become the links in the very chains that bind them to poverty. Demanding that the government take money away from those that produce wealth and redistribute it to those who don't has failed everywhere it has been tried and will fail again here. You can look at today's stock market, as it appears more likely that taxes may be going up on the wealthy, they are liquidating assets to avoid a huge tax bill next year. Is this really what we want?

This sounds like a temper tantrum because you didn't get what you wanted on Tuesday. Freedom in this country means voting for whomever you wish without fear or threat. Yet you lionize those who fire people who don't vote the way their bosses want them to. You don't represent conservatism. You typify extremism. Look up "propaganda" and do some quiet introspection.

More room in the aisles for the rest of us, good riddance. You're the same people who screamed about freedom of speech and religion when a Chik-Fil-A boycott was suggested. The message you've taken from The President's reelection is simply the deluded thinking of an extremist. Enjoy your Papa Johns cardboard and ketchup.

Oh please!!! This narrow minded approach to reality is the reason why the republican party was denied the election. Say no more!

So what you are saying is that you won't be shopping at Wegmans for the cheese to go with your whine?

I can feel for the author, having had my business threatened with boycotts from the left because I dared let my party affiliation become known. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. I won't be as vocal or obnoxious as the liberals who called me vile names to my face and posted publicly their intention to put me out of business but I can choose to spend my money at places with whom I am aligned politically.

I noticed a common thread among people with extreme political views: they do not believe that the rules that they try to impose on others should also apply to themselves. Above, the author decries "freedom destroyers" and those who she believes do not "support personal freedom and the Constitution." Yet, she applauds and enourages people who share her political views to then infringe on the personal freedom and Constitutional rights of people who did not vote for the candidate that she prefers by firing them, etc. Then in the comments section, accusatory and rude language in the blog post is answered in kind, and suddenly rudeness is unacceptable. Do the author and her fellow "ninjas" not see the twisted logic and perverted sense of entitled righteousness in this post? Because if they don't I must conclude a lack of intelligence on their part and beseech The Patch to seek higher quality contributors.

PatchWatcher, I am curious what you mean by " infringe on the personal freedom and Constitutional rights"? Not that I would do all that the authors friends have done, but none of those actions are illegal in any way or violate the constitution. Are you proposing that I be forced by the federal government to do business with those I may prefer not to, for what ever reason I may choose?

It's a poor choice to associate political beliefs with a business, unless of course your business is politics. Why would anyone remain anything but neutral? Wegman's didn't hang Obama Campaign posters. The CEOs the "author" references made political contributions and now she wants to punish evryone associated with those companies. She goes further and describes these folks as "propagandizing, ignorant, malicious, pandering, selfish freedom destroyers". Over the top nonsense. This company employs 38,000 people and epitomizes capitalism. Right wingers often accuse liberals of "demonizing" success. If this isn't demonizing, I don't know what is.

Just curious if those that are disagreeing with the author like @Dogman for boycotting due to political beliefs of the owners where as outspoken during the ChickFilet boycott a few months back?

Of course not. We should support whatever businesses we want to. Personally, I shop at small businesses because I believe in supporting them, regardless of the owners' political affiliations. But, it disturbs me that the author is lauding people who "cleaned house" among their employees when they learned that their voting choices differed from theirs. We, as Americans, do not have the right to threaten others into voting as we do or face retribution, particularly from an employer's wrath. Doesn't that take away those citizens' "voice and independence?"

Howard, you miss the point. It's perfectly legitimate to not give your money to a business that supports causes you find wrong. I don't boycott Chik Fil A because I don't eat there anyway. The larger point is the way the author describes those who support Democrats. I find the Papa John's CEO's statements to be offensive and I won't give him my business but I also don't refer to him as "ignorant, malicious, pandering, selfish freedom destroyers".

personally, I choose to spend my hard earned money on products that say "Made in America". I support local or corporate businesses regardless of their political affiliation. Look at the sticker on the bottom. If it says made in another country other than USA, pass. The only exception I make might be electronics since the asians have the market cornered there.

I suppose we've all argued with twisted at some point in our lives. Then there are the cruel facts of reality. That said, your reality clearly has no relationship to mine. I hope your income skyrockets incoming years, because if it does not, your reality will undoubtedly change. Obamacare has many flaws to work out, but this country has to start somewhere with healthcare. I'm not looking forward to it but I'm willing to give it a try. And someday, people will be glad of that. I won't be here, but my grandchildren will be, and I want them to have the best live they can have in coming years.

Everyone gets a choice (and a vote). So if you choose to boycott local stores because they supported a politician you do not like, you are hurting only yourselves. Trickle-down effect. Wegman's pays taxes and their employees pay taxes and economically support the areas where they live and work. Get over the hatred of Democrats and Obama. Move on and try again in 4 years.

Poor Laura :( No Wegman's, No Yankee candles. You have to much time on your hands, and enough money to buy over priced candles, and shop at Wegmans. Find some passion in you life that is not full of Upper Middle Class. Fight the Power Crap! Like a good partner to cuddle up with. Oh yeah did you ever think that that maybe the person at the deli section. just saw you coming and your vibe made them rude there are to many fake people out her that would like to be treated like a Kardashian. You give respect you get respect. I buy my candles at the dollar store. And stop eating lunch meat it not good for you. If you really want to do something that is rewarding go volunteer at the Philadelphia VA. Hugs and Kisses :)
